Religious Abuse in The Early Church.
I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will not welcome us. So when I come, I will call attention to what he is doing, spreading malicious nonsense about us. Not satisfied with that, he even refuses to welcome other believers. He also stops those who want to do so and puts them out of the church. (3 John 1:9-10 -)
The Apostle John, the author of the Gospel of John, and the 3 letters of 1 John, 2, John, as well as 3 John- He wrote this to call to attention some fellow that was using his position in the church for self interest. “Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will not welcome us.”
He was also slandering the Apostle to the people in the church, as well as
“Not satisfied with that, he even refuses to welcome other believers. He also stops those who want to do so and puts them out of the church.”
Leadership in church is no power trip, in our day and time there are churches who may opperate this way. Yet the Scripture addresses every issue we could ever come across. It is as true today as then! There are no new things under the sun as Solomon wrote in Ecclessiastes!
To use a high role in a church or use The Lord’s name by stamping it on behavior that dishonors him is in a sense breaking the command also “You shall not use the Lord your God’s name in vain” and everytime someone stamps his name on something His word would denounce, that is forging The Lord’s signature on something he detests!
