Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched. There in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body. Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?” But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way. Then he asked them, “If one of you has a child or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?” And they had nothing to say.
In this story we see Luke describe a man with a literal medical condition that we now know as Edema, which means excessive fluid retention in the limbs and appendages- therefore he had swelling.
Yet many walk around witg a type of spiritual Dropsy, guilt and shame and they are tender to the touch and react almost in intense manners when you suggest they did something that may invoke their longstanding guilt.
Yet the Pharisaic mindset was to not mess with the man, and it be Pharasaic in our attitudes as believers to be hard on the sinner without desiring he or she too find Jesus’s healing touch of grace to remove their guilt and give them new life, healing and wholeness, a freedom from guilt and shame of their past! Only Jesus can forgive and heal but we must be his messengers and intercede for these people!
Guilt is just like inflamation, it serves only the purpose to alert us something is wrong in our lives just as inflamation serves to alert us something is going on in the body. Yet Chronic inflamation is not healthy nor is chronic guilt. We must all of us acknowlege our sin to God and in faith trust Jesus will touch us- and if we let our guilt do nothing helpful or bring change them it serves only to make the poor man or woman miserable, not bring such a man or woman to true healing, wholeness and greater emotional and spiritual health.
Praise Jesus! For the Word says
“By his wounds you are healed”
