(1 Corinthians 1:10- 13) I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. What I mean is that each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.” Is Christ divided?
This is the question we too must ask, for there are those who talk of this preacher, teacher or pastor, and those who talk about these and those. Yet is Christ divided? Is he not still the Bridegroom of His Church? Or is he not still the Head of His Body, the Church, whom, “the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God. ”
Some say “well John Calvin taught this, and Luther taught that,” or one person says “my pastor taught this and the man or woman says my pastor said this.”
Yet who are these esteemed people in the faith? Only slaves of the Lord and his gospel they were also indebted. Even great men like Spurgeon, Tozer, C.S Lewis, Wesley, Luther, or any other esteemed messenger is as the great Apostle Paul said,
“What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building. According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.” (1 Corinthians 3:5-17)
As great as these folks were used and as great as the esteemed Pastors of our day who people dispute over “who is a better teacher?” Or “Are they this or that in theology?” – Not to say theology is not important because it is very important yet do we see churches split over trivial matters? Yes. I have heard people bash Rick Warren, and others bash John Piper, some call him a heritic from one side and then those on the other side say, “No your teacher is a heretic”
We must call this what it is, nothing more the what our midevil ancestors screamed, “Witch, burn them at the stake”
People can only do one of too things, sow seed or scatter it, build up the kingdom of the Lord, or tear it down.
I enjoy both Rick Warren, John Piper, Billy Graham and all those I have not seen from my scriptural view point “Heretics”
There are false teachers abounding in America but be careful not to be the boy who always “cried wolf”
(1 Corinthians 6:19-20) Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
The immediate context implies “our bodies are the temple” yet another insight I felt the Lord impress on my understanding, “believers are also the temple” so there is a danger in tearing down those who are not truly false believers with false accusations and slander! If someone says “Christ is only one way to God,” or “He is not really God’s Son, God in the flesh” or “You can be saved another way, by works not just grace” or any other thing that is black and white heresy, then such people should be exposed for preaching falsehood, but when we call anyone a false teacher just because we do not like their preaching style or this or that, we must examine their words and unless they say anything that is real heresy then we must be careful not to
1 Corinthians 3:16-23 Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple,
⁃ and it goes on to say, “God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple. Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,” and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” So let no one boast in men. For all things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are yours, and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.
